When do rates of domestic violence cases increase?
Following the recent Euros 2020 Final, social media was flooded with violent videos of football hooligans lashing out after the loss of the England team. This made me think about how different events in history and modern day must have a huge impact on cases of violence, and particularly domestic violence. In 2014, academics at Lancaster University looked at the number of domestic abuse reports to police stations during three separate World Cups. They found that when the national team lost, domestic violence cases rose by 38%, or more if it was England that won. Unbelievably, even if the team won or drew, cases still rose by 26%, meaning that whenever a large scale football event occurs, so does an increase in domestic violence. These figures are utterly disgusting, but following related sources on social media, I have seen comments that do not surprise me that these figures are true.
