Recent Domestic Violence Statistics
Domestic Abuse in England and Wales Overview March 2019 - March 2020
The Crime Survey estimated that 2.3 million adults aged 16 to 74 experienced domestic abuse in that year, more specifically 1.6 million women and 757,000 men. This was 3.43% of the whole population of the UK. Although this figure seems small, it is spectacularly too large for us to ignore.
The police recorded 758,941 domestic abuse related crimes which was a 9% increase from the year before. The Office for National Statistics have put this down to better police work alongside the reporting of victims. However, should we not look at the increase negatively since domestic related crimes have risen, and the trend continues to rise since this is reflected in the statistics?
Even after so many national and international laws and directives, domestic violence rates have not sufficiently dropped to a rate that is no longer frighteningly high. In my opinion, this insinuates that it is not just domestic abuse that we need to target as a nation, but the inequality women still face is a huge factor in these high figures. If women were seen as equals in society, it is impossible to argue that the figures of domestic abuse wouldn't drop. Since many people still have old fashioned views and see women as inferior or 'less than' human, they do not feel the same empathy towards them as they do to other men. This is a wider problem that needs to be solved.
